In general, you must apply for a study permit before coming to Canada. Some people can apply for a study permit from within Canada. In some cases, you can apply when you arrive in Canada at the port of entry. Make sure you understand your options.

This permit, a type of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows students to study in Canada for a limited time and typically indicates the educational institution and course of study. Can I extend my student visa?

You certainly can. Form IMM 1249 will be required. Individuals who want to extend their study permit in Canada must use this immigration visa form. Individuals fill out form IMM 1249 in order to change their conditions or extend their stay in Canada as students. This application is for temporary residents who are currently studying in Canada. Individuals with valid current temporary resident status may apply for a stay extension if they apply at least 30 days before the expiry date of their current status.

Can I work while on a Study Permit?

Your employment is on-campus; The international student is the recipient of a scholarship; The work has been certified as being an integral part of the program of study; The work consists of academic research or a post-doctoral fellowship; The work takes place after graduation in a field related to the program of study.
