PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS' SPONSORSHIP & How it Works?

Canada established this scheme in an effort to prevent successful immigrants from returning home to take care of their aging parents. Sponsorship of parents and grandparents switched from an intake process to a random drawing in 2017. Anyone who meets the requirements and wants to sponsor their parents or grandparents must fill out the IRCC website’s online interest to sponsor form.

For its Parents and Grandparents Program, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has announced that it would end its contentious random selection procedure in 2019 and switch to a first-come, first-served method of asking interested sponsors to apply. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) will accept up to 20,000 new sponsorship applications through the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2019, according to a news release that also announced the change on August 20.

Procedure for the Parents and Grandparents program

The sponsor is responsible for providing parents and grandparents with the necessities of life, such as food, clothing, utilities, shelter, fuel, personal needs, and household goods. Additionally, the sponsor must offer medical services like eye and dental treatment that are not covered by public health.

The day the individual being sponsored (and their family members, if appropriate) become Canadian citizens or permanent residents marks the start of the sponsor’s obligations.

The undertaking remains enforceable if the sponsor’s circumstances change. This means that even in the following scenarios, the sponsor must still meet minimum requirements for the duration of the undertaking:

  • Marital breakdown, separation, or divorce
  • Family rifts
  • Unemployment
  • Change in financial circumstances
  • Death of the principal applicant if a person is sponsoring their family members

Program for Grandparents & Parents Documents

The sponsor should use the document checklist (IMM 5771) to compile the necessary paperwork, and they should be sure to submit all of the stated documents.

For the application to be deemed complete, the sponsor must submit both their own filled-out forms and the forms that the lead applicant filled out. Also, for each set of sponsored family members (parents and grandparents), all necessary documents must be enclosed together in one envelope.

If the sponsor is unable to supply any of the documents listed on the document checklist, they should explain why in writing and, if feasible, include supporting documentation to prevent the application from being rejected or held up during processing.

Any incomplete applications will be returned, as was already explained. Check the document checklist, the documents that are attached, and whether the processing fee payment is inserted before submitting.

The sponsor has the opportunity to withdraw the application for a variety of reasons, although depending on the stage of the application for sponsorship, the processing expenses might not be reimbursed.
